Novato Theater Company’s fun-filled Mamma Mia!, written by Catherine Johnson, is a much-needed reprieve from the cacophony that surrounds us. Joyful, energetic, and warmly nostalgic, the production sweeps us into a world where music, friendship, romance, and laughter triumphs everything. Creative direction by Lisa Morse keeps the story moving briskly while allowing the emotional heart of the characters to shine. It’s music (Nick Brown conducting) holds up the magic as part of the audience moves to its beat.
At the center of the story is Donna Sheridan, (Julianne Bretan) the fiercely independent mother whose past unexpectedly resurfaces on the eve of her daughter Sophie’s (Giocandra (Gia) Mirra) wedding. Sophie’s hopeful search for identity and family connection gives the musical much of its emotional base with Donna’s longtime friends Tanya (Jane Harington) and Rosie’s (Lauren Sutton-Beattie). Their humor, warmth, and spirited comic timing. enhances many scenes.T he arrival of Sam, (Lorenzo Alviso) Bill (Cordell Wesselink), and Harry (David Cole)—the three men from Donna’s past creates both chaos and tenderness as old memories and unresolved feelings come rushing back. Some heartbrakes, too, played well by Mirra.
Talented choreographer Marilyn Izdebski skillfully coordinates the large cast filling the stage with exacting dance movements and inspiring enthusiasm. From spirited dance sequence numbers like Dancing Queen to sequences ensemble numbers, Does Your Mother Know?, the production rarely slows its pace. The cast’s chemistry feels natural and easygoing, luring the audience into the celebration rather than simply watching a story unfold.
Music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus are superbly delivered by the live band, keeping the audience hopping and giving ABBA’s beloved songs an upbeat vitality that pulses through the theater. Familiar hits spark waves of recognition and smiles throughout the crowd–Take A Chance On Me and I Have A Dream–turning the evening into a shared communal experience. Beneath the glitter and humor, the play gently reminds us of the enduring loves and memories that music and theater gifts us.
Reminese and have some fun–shut the outside world out and hum Thank You For The Music.
